This week, Helen Bownass loses her heart to a deeply romantic true story, while Kayleigh Dray talks up a new Netflix thriller and gifts us three titles for our watchlists…

Netflix’s Dept. Q and the cold case thriller we can’t resist

“There’s something undeniably compelling about a mystery that’s gone unsolved, especially when it’s purely fictional,” says Kayleigh. “And Netflix’s new series Dept. Q, based on the bestselling novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, dives into this exact territory.

“Starring Matthew Goode as a guilt-ridden detective reassigned to a cold case unit, it pairs slow-burning suspense with emotional weight and a sharp, noir edge. And a starry cast, including Chloe Pirrie, Leah Byrne, Kate Dickie, Shirley Henderson and Kelly Macdonald, to name just a few.

“Still, what is it about cold cases that captures our imagination? Maybe it’s the promise of long-overdue justice. Maybe it’s the haunting sense that the past refuses to stay buried. Or maybe it’s simply that these stories let us play detective… without the ethical messiness of true crime.

“From forgotten clues to unpredictable twists, Dept. Q taps into everything we love about unsolved mysteries. And, under the direction of The Queen’s Gambit’s Scott Frank, it does so with style. Watch it when it drops on Thursday 29 May, and, in the meantime, read more about my love affair with fictional cold cases here.”

This quiet and tender romance had me hooked

“In 2013, Raynor Winn learned that her husband, Moth, was terminally ill. A few days later, their home was taken away, leaving them with nowhere to go and only £115 to their name,” says Helen.

“On a whim, they made the decision to start walking the southwest coast path, 630 miles from Somerset to Dorset, carrying their only belongings on their back. It’s a difficult journey made even harder by Moth’s degenerative neurological disorder.

“Winn documented their journey and later made it into a book for her husband, to remind him of the trip, but it went on to sell more than 2 million copies worldwide. It’s now been made into a film starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs as the couple learning to survive in the wilderness, pitching their tent in terrible places, surviving on noodles and what they can scrounge, and battling every type of weather you can imagine.

“It’s a slow and intimate film about hope in adversity, healing from being broken and the power of nature. But the thing that struck me the most (alongside the soaring scenery that made me want to get into the fresh air and walk) was the love story between Moth and Raynor; their tender connection during the toughest of times is quietly and wildly romantic.” Salt Path hits UK cinemas on Friday 30 May.

Jane Austen: Rise Of A Genius

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is the pioneer of modern romance. This three-part series, which delves deep into the contents of the author’s surviving letters (Jane’s sister, Cassandra, unhelpfully burnt most of them), explores how the celebrated writer ripped up the rulebook and reinvented the novel – all while honouring the female gaze, no less. Expect to hear from the likes of Helen Fielding, Candice Carty-Williams and more. 9pm, Monday 26 May; BBC iPlayer and BBC Two

Ellie Simmonds: Should I Have Children?

In this deeply personal documentary, Paralympic athlete Ellie Simmonds grapples with her own fears, dreams and beliefs in equality for Disabled people as she questions whether she is fully prepared to navigate a pregnancy. It’s an emotionally charged subject, and one that we’ve rarely seen on our screens. As ever, though, Ellie does it justice, meeting with doctors, geneticists, cardiologists, midwives, counsellors and parents faced with life-changing choices in a bid to challenge perceptions. 9pm, Tuesday 27 May; ITV1 and ITVX

And Just Like That: season 3

“There’s nothing like summer in New York City. With its hot days and even hotter nights, something new and unexpected always awaits.” So promises Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw ahead of this new chapter, but I suspect not every twist will be a pleasant one for our stylish widow as she continues to navigate life after Big. Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Nicole Ari Parker, Sarita Choudhury and John ‘Aidan’ Corbett return – but no Kim Cattrall, sadly. 2.05am/9pm, Friday 30 May; Sky Comedy and NOW
