This week, Stylist contributor Meg Walters falls for The Last Showgirl, while Kayleigh Dray gets excited for Kate Hudson’s big Netflix comedy – and cherry-picks three new titles for us to watch.

Kate Hudson reminds us that she’s still Hollywood’s golden girl

“Kate Hudson’s name has been synonymous with stardom ever since the year 2000, when she stepped into the shoes of Penny Lane in Almost Famous,” says Kayleigh. “Now, she’s about to take the lead in Netflix’s Running Point, the new comedy from Mindy Kaling – and it will show us a whole new side to the Golden Globe-winning, Academy Award-nominated actor.

“Hudson plays Isla Gordon, a reformed party girl with a penchant for power suits. Despite being overlooked for years, she’s unexpectedly named president of her family business, a basketball franchise named the Los Angeles Waves. Her brothers are sceptical, the board is wary and the fans are deeply unimpressed. Can Isla prove herself a force to be reckoned with in the male-dominated world of professional sports? My money’s on ‘hell yeah’.

“While there are plenty of reasons to tune into this wholesome feminist comedy (humour! Heart! Complex family dynamics! Major Ted Lasso vibes!), one of the biggest draws is Hudson herself. Whether you loved her most in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Bride Wars, Deepwater Horizon, Glee, romcom staple How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days or something else entirely, the actor’s made a point of winning hearts throughout her varied onscreen career.

“I know: on paper, Hudson should be the kind of person who makes us wild with jealousy. She’s not just an actor, but a humanitarian, musician and empress of her own Fabletics wellness frontier. Her mum is Actual Goldie Hawn. Her hair is impossibly glossy. Her career spans two decades, and shows no signs of slowing down (she’s set to appear opposite Hugh Jackman in musical docudrama Song Sung Blue when it drops later this year). And yet she’s an undisputed icon, and one of America’s enduring sweethearts. Bring on the Hudsonnaissance!” Running Point is available to stream on Netflix from Thursday 27 February

Pamela Anderson is quietly heartbreaking in an award-worthy comeback

“There is an aching, inevitable sadness that runs just below the surface of The Last Showgirl,” says Meg. “Gia Coppola’s indie drama stars Pamela Anderson as Shelly, an older Las Vegas showgirl forced to confront her career’s worth when the revue she has worked at for 30 years finally closes.

“Shelly’s estranged adult daughter Hannah (Billie Lourd) certainly doesn’t think her mum’s work has been valuable, as revealed by a few strained, frustrated interactions. Similarly, Shelly’s castmates aren’t too sad to see the revue go: for the likes of Annette (Jamie Lee Curtis), dancing was just a job, and not a great one at that. A painfully embarrassing audition for another local show indicates that the rest of the professional world is equally dismissive of Shelly.

“Shooting on 16mm film, Coppola brings a gritty, faded beauty to Las Vegas that reflects Shelly’s nostalgia for a brighter past. And, of course, the parallels between Anderson and her character are impossible to ignore as she tackles the role with a quiet, heartbreaking soulfulness. The result? A poignant study of sacrifice and disillusionment – one that will sit with you long after the credits have finished rolling.” The Last Showgirl is in UK cinemas from Friday 28 February

Abbott Elementary: Season 4A

It’s time to return to Abbott Elementary! The first half of the top-tier sitcom’s much anticipated fourth season is dropping this week, which means we can finally find out what’s in store for Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) after that incredibly good kiss. Throw in the relentless march of gentrification – and the school’s attempts to fight it off – and you have another laugh-out-loud yet thought-provoking batch of episodes. Wednesday 26 February; Disney+

Toxic Town

Starring Jodie Whittaker, Aimee Lou Wood and Claudia Jessie, this hard-hitting drama is based on the true story of a mass poisoning that took place in Corby. After dozens of babies are born with disabilities in the Northamptonshire town, their mothers embark on a decades-long David and Goliath-style battle for justice. It promises to be a moving story about resilience, community, institutional negligence and corporate greed – as well as the power of parents’ love for their children. Thursday 27 February; Netflix

Small Town, Big Story

In the mood for a very dramatic comedy? Be sure to settle in for this six-part series, which spirits us away to a teeny-weeny Irish town called Drumbán. There, Hollywood TV producer Wendy Patterson (Christina Hendricks) is returning home for the first time in over 20 years. She’s got a film crew in tow – and her project is threatening to blow open a secret that respected doctor Séamus Proctor (Paddy Considine) has been harbouring since the turn of the millennium. Thursday 27 February; Sky and NOW
