This week, Helen Bownass unveils the tantalising thriller that ticks every single box, while Kayleigh Dray cherry-picks three new titles to add to your watchlist (and loses her heart to a bighearted Netflix comedy)…

High Potential

Written by The Good Place’s Drew Goddard, ready yourselves for a series about a smart-as-a-whip single mum (Kaitlyn Olson) with a knack for unravelling mysteries. Can her unstoppable partnership with a seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata) result in them solving a seemingly unsolvable crime, though? I have my suspicions… Thursday 23 January; Disney+

The Brutalist

Visually stunning, this engrossing epic follows László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Holocaust survivor who starts a new life in the US. His bids to achieve the American dream prove increasingly desperate, however – until a chance encounter with a wealthy client changes his life. The perennially brilliant Felicity Jones also stars. Friday 24 January; UK cinemas

The Traitors: S3 finale

Grab your cloaks and your beverage of choice, because it’s the big one: Faithfuls v Traitors, all turning on one another for the last time as an ever-watchful (and ever-stylish) Claudia Winkleman stalks the shadows. Who will snatch the jackpot? Fingers crossed that, whoever wins, the drama’s on par with that iconic S2 finale… 8.30pm, Friday 24 January; BBC One and iPlayer

Prime Target, the sparky new thriller to get obsessed with

“There’s something about January that makes me want to only watch thrillers (and The Traitors, which is thriller adjacent),” says Helen. “Perhaps it’s the need to juxtapose a month that’s so cold, uneventful and sofa-based with something, anything, to spike my adrenaline levels. So I’m very much looking forward to Prime Target coming to Apple TV+ this week.

“At the centre of the eight-part series is TV’s new boyfriend Leo Woodall (who’s had a very busy year after starring in One Day and as Bridget Jones’s love interest in the upcoming Mad About The Boy). He plays a maths genius student at Cambridge who is looking for sequences in prime numbers that could potentially hold the key to every computer in the world – whatever that means.

“There are a lot of people who aren’t thrilled about what he’s trying to uncover, and after he’s tracked down by an NSA agent (played by Quintessa Swindell), together they begin to unravel a government conspiracy.

“I suspect the maths and tech will all go over my head, but (like with Industry) I don’t think that will matter. It’s got someone being unfathomably smart, it’s got Cambridge libraries, it’s got high-octane chases and angry American politicians; I will be lying down and ready…” Prime Target begins on Wednesday 22 January via Apple TV+

... A Man On The Inside is my new favourite series, ever

“It’s been a wee while since I binged a series that made me grab my phone and send everyone I love an urgent message imploring them to watch it,” says Kayleigh. “When I polished off Netflix’s A Man On The Inside in a single evening, though, I did exactly that – and all while ugly-crying over its big finale, no less.

“Starring Ted Danson, a man who oozes charisma from every single pore, this one weaves a yarn about a retired professor who takes a job as an undercover mole at a luxury retirement home. His mission? To weed out the thief who swiped a precious family heirloom – no small feat, considering staff and residents alike are all suspects (and that he’s an utterly hopeless detective, of course).

“With that premise, you’re right in assuming this one’s big on laughs. It’s also full of heart and bittersweet moments, delving into some incredibly thought-provoking topics: loss, for example. Loneliness. Estrangement. Our fears around growing older, frailer, less useful. Love, in all of its quietest and most beautiful forms.

“Reader, I sobbed a lot over this juicy eight-episode series, and that’s largely down to the obscenely talented cast. Honestly, Danson, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Margaret Avery, Susan Ruttan, Sally Struthers, Stephen McKinley Henderson and everyone else gifts us the sort of characters that walk off the screen and into our hearts. I just wanted to spend more time with them when the credits rolled on that final episode.

“Thankfully, with a second season already confirmed for 2025, it seems as if my prayers have been answered. This time, though, I won’t be waiting; I’ll be hitting ‘play’ the very second it drops…” Watch A Man On The Inside via Netflix now.
