How to tell if you’re operating on ‘low-power mode’ – and what to do about it

You know how your phone has that low-power mode warning after hours of late-night doomscrolling? Or the petrol gauge in your car will go from amber to red (at which point, if you’re anything like us, you’ll panic and scramble to the closest petrol station, pronto)?

Well, in news that might not be entirely welcome (pre-Christmas stress, anyone?), it turns out our brains have the very same function. Dubbed ’low-power mode’ by neurologist Dr Faye Begeti (aka The Brain Doctor), running our batteries right down has consequences. Here’s how to spot the signs you’re running on empty – and what you can do about it.

Gemma Barry is a holistic menstrual coach, founder of The Well Woman Project, and author of Periods Aren’t Meant To Bloody Hurt

I first started paying proper attention to my period health when… when I stopped taking synthetic hormones. I was on them to help with my period but they didn’t really ease the pain. When I came off them, I realised what a mess my cycle and periods were. I started to track them and was blown away by the amount of information that gave me. It took ages for anyone to listen to me about the problems I was experiencing, though.

My day usually begins with… going for a walk with my two dogs, Indie and Retro. We have a good stomp about in the forest, then we’ll get home, have breakfast, I’ll make myself a brew and check my diary before checking in with my clients. I work closely with them and really enjoy supporting them.

On the first day of my period, I always… take it really easy. The ads might have you believe that you should be running marathons and jumping out of planes, but you’ll find me in comfy clothes and my slippers. I take advantage of really resting, going to bed early and essentially hibernating from the world.

If I’m feeling run down, I… rest – although sometimes I try to fight against that and end up wondering why everything is feeling difficult. There is so much guilt and shame about resting up. If you rest now, you’ll get charged back up. If you keep pushing and pushing, you’ll eventually face-plant. We all need down time and there’s no shame in that.

My non-negotiable self-care habits include… getting outside into nature every day, come rain or shine, taking my supplements to support my health, moving my body and journaling. I also chart my cycle every night using pen and paper.

This pea and mushroom larb is an excellent source of fibre and plant-based protein

There’s a reason why a bag of peas should be a staple in every freezer – and it’s not just because they’re handy for nursing any bumps or scrapes. The humble pea is a nutritional powerhouse: it contains almost all the 13 essential vitamins that the body needs to function (like vitamins C, E, zinc and thiamine), as well as being a good source of fibre and plant-based protein. This recipe from Yes Peas! contains a whopping 300g of frozen peas, so you can rest easy in the knowledge that you’ll be taking in plenty of goodness.

The word ‘larb’ means ‘chopped up’ in Thai, and while the dish traditionally contains some kind of minced meat, this recipe brings together peas, toasted rice and shiitake mushrooms to give the lettuce wraps a delicious plant-powered filling. The best bit? It takes just 25 minutes to make, so you’ll be chowing down on some delicious Thai-flavoured goodness before you know it.
