Athlete A is not an easy watch – it may be triggering for some – but it’s an important and compelling one. The new Netflix documentary, available today, follows the 2016 investigation by a handful of Indianapolis Star reporters as they uncover decades of abuse of gymnasts by USA Gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar, and discover how his crimes were enabled and covered up by authorities. Documentary makers Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk speak to many of the women abused by Nassar – 500 survivors have now come forward – including Maggie Nichols, who was on track to join the Olympic team and was the first to report Nassar, giving her the name Athlete A.
“Watching the survivors of Nassar’s abuse stand up to him in court, often with their families supporting them, is something that will stay with me for a long time,” says Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass. “The cover-up that allowed this behaviour to happen for years is horrifying and anger-inducing, but the incredible bravery of these 200 women speaking out is something to behold.” Athlete A is on Netflix now
