The ethical denim brands to know
Who said buying jeans had to be hard? These are the brands making it easier to find pieces that’ll look great on you – and the planet
Iden

Young brand Iden is quickly becoming London’s latest IT brand, but fast fashion it is not. The sustainably-created denim pieces are made in small supply chains with forward-thinking mills, reduced water usage, recycled leather patches and eco-friendly trims (the buttons and rivets, basically).

The skinny dart organic jeans in washed black (£155) are a daily go-to in the Stylist Loves office: super-soft and incredibly comfortable. For something a bit more directional, the organic shadow wash jacket (£260) and jeans (£185, Atterley) make dreamy separates – but they’re even better together. Our tip: buy a size smaller than what you’d usually go for on the high street.

Kowtow

Want denim everything, not just jeans? New Zealand brand Kowtow do dresses, jumpsuits, jackets and more — including this organic, eco-friendly and fair trade button-up skirt (£157, Gather & See). It’s the perfect almost-summer piece to wear now with tees and shirts — then pair with jumpers and boots come autumn. We recommend ordering your regular size; if it comes up a little roomy, you can cinch it in with the tie belt (and it’ll make tucking those jumpers in a whole lot easier). Lucy & Yak

We’re so deeply enamoured with Lucy & Yak that it’s almost a crime. The indie brand’s founders literally travelled the world to find a small, family-run business to work with who would genuinely benefit from making their signature dungarees (it’s a lovely story, read it here). And the resulting colourful corduroy and cotton dungarees are – to those in the know – ridiculously comfortable.

The brand’s denim Atlas dungas (£60) are made from sustainable organic cotton and have a slightly roomier fit to the originals, adjustable straps, and a look that says “throw anything at me, I’m in an all-in-one, baby”.

Tomorrow

“The first brand to receive Nordic and EU Ecolabels” is a pretty sweet line to have on your CV. So it’s lucky for Henriette Pieszak, the Copenhagen-based founder of Tomorrow denim, who makes sure her brand creates products which meet tip-top environmental standards throughout their life cycle. The vibe here is unsurprisingly of the Scandi-cool school of design (think simple, timeless cuts) and it’s the mid-blue, straight leg jean (£145, Asos) we are picturing wearing with a crisp white T-shirt and dad sandals this summer.

Kings of Indigo

You know a brand takes its eco cred seriously when the main tabs on its website read: ‘Men’, ‘Women’ and ‘Sustainability’. The Amsterdam-based team behind Kings of Indigo is constantly trying to improve the brand’s impact on the planet and actively discourage shoppers from buying seasonally. We love the blue Alice belted shorts (€99.95, approx £87), which also come in a ludicrously good-looking ecru and surf print (!) version (£90, Asos). Be still our beating… legs. ● Words by Kat Poole

Every week we have the pleasure of bringing you our pick of the pieces every wardrobe needs. First up, Stylist Loves editor Kat Poole introduces her favourite little gold hoops

There comes a point in every woman’s life where she takes one look at her jewellery collection, shakes her head, and says to herself, “Honey, you need a pair of little gold hoops”. They’re simple, versatile, and capable of jazzing an outfit right up or taking it all the way down to Casual Town. Seol+Gold are a truly great little London-based brand making minimal, contemporary jewellery which won’t cost you heaven and earth, and they have one of the best ranges of 9ct hoops we’ve found.

There’s plain, thin, thick, creoles, huggies, curved, dotted, scalloped and more – we’d list them all but we don’t like overkill. Bonus points: orders come packaged in sweet little canvas bags, so they make perfect presents, too. From £6.45, Seol+Gold

More lovely stuff you need to know

Look, we’re all for grown-up, minimalist dressing (you wouldn’t believe how many camel trench coats appear in the Stylist office of a weekday). But sometimes, we just want to revel in the joy of frivolous fashion – and Rixo’s new collaboration with French journalist Sabina Socol is a dressing-up box of delights. Our pick? The hot pink, leopard-print ‘Clarisse’ minidress (£255), which dances along the bad-taste tightrope with thrilling ease. ● Words by Moya Crockett
