Horrendous heatwaves might be keeping us indoors, but thankfully July’s entertainment line-up is making staying in (or escaping to an air-conditioned cinema) look incredibly appealing. This month, Kayleigh Dray explains why one twisty thriller should be at the top of your watchlist, celebrates the return of Tomdaya season as Hollywood’s favourite couple light up our screens once again and rounds up the seven unmissable TV shows and films landing this month. Whether you’re hiding under a fan or making the most of blockbuster season, we’ve got your viewing plans sorted.

Say hello to the gaspworthy thriller series we’re all sleeping on right now

...why Tomdaya are the MVPs of July

“July is giving us not one but two reasons to spend a couple of hours in a blissfully air-conditioned cinema. The Odyssey sails into cinemas on 17 July, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day on 29 July, which means blockbuster season is officially in full swing,” says Kayleigh. “Popcorn? Essential, so long as you promise to chew quietly (etiquette is everything). Frozen drink? Non-negotiable.

“Still, let’s be honest: the real bonus isn’t just an opportunity to avoid these horrendous heatwaves; it’s that we’re entering another glorious era of Tomdaya. Yes, I’m parasocial, and I’m at peace with it. Honestly, their chemistry is magnetic, Zendaya is an icon; Tom continues to set the internet’s standard for the green flag boyfriend, and the way they champion and genuinely respect one another makes them impossible not to root for.

“Every Spider-Man press tour has felt like watching a romcom unfold in real time, and now I get to look forward to another round of adorable interviews, stolen glances and inevitably impeccable red carpet fashion. Seeing them play Peter Parker and MJ hits a little differently when you’re also quietly rooting for their real-life romance. Whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives us the happily ever after they deserve is anyone’s guess (being Spider-Man has never exactly been conducive to a stress-free love life, right?), but at least Tomdaya have already given us one in real life.

“And with the Dune press tour poised and ready to begin? Well, I’m already seated for whatever they’ll dream up on the red carpet next.”

Elle

Elle Woods is back! This Legally Blonde prequel series follows a younger Elle navigating friendship, ambition and the early stirrings of her signature confidence (and yes, that hopefully means bend-and-snap origins). Expect pink, optimism and plenty of female friendship as she finds her voice long before Harvard Law.  Streaming now; Prime Video

Little House On The Prairie

A fresh adaptation of the beloved classic, this new version of Little House On The Prairie revisits the Ingalls family with a modern sensibility while staying rooted in frontier life. Think sweeping landscapes, family drama and wholesome emotional beats designed to tug firmly on the heartstrings. Tears, people. Expect them. Thursday 9 July; Netflix

Ride Or Die

This tale of two ride-or-die BFFs takes a wildly dangerous turn when one discovers the other is secretly an international assassin. Starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer, prepare yourself for a slick thriller blends espionage with messy friendship dynamics (and a lot of ‘would you still love me if I killed for a living?’ energy for good measure). Wednesday 15 July; Prime Video

Lucky

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) stars in this high-stakes thriller based on the bestselling novel, in which a woman is forced to confront a dangerous past she thought she’d escaped. Stylish, tense and twist-heavy, it promises paranoia, power plays and a lead performance built for awards season buzz. Wednesday 15 July; Apple TV+

Heartstopper Forever

The beloved story comes to a close in this final film, as Nick, Charlie and all their wonderful friends navigate the emotional realities of growing up. Can love survive the end of school? It better do, as I demand a fittingly hopeful goodbye to one of TV’s most cherished young love stories. Friday 17 July; Netflix

Furious

You wait for one thriller and then hundreds turn up at once, right? Here, Emmy Rossum stars as an FBI agent tracking a female serial killer whose crimes are as calculated as they are brutal. Which means, yes, we are in for a dark, propulsive thriller built around obsession and cat-and-mouse tension. Monday 27 July; Disney+

The Five-Star Weekend

Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel, this glossy drama (starring some seriously big names in Jennifer Garner and Gemma Chan) follows a group of women brought together by grief, friendship and the complicated business of starting over. If you find yourself in the mood for sun-soaked emotion, this is the solution. Thursday 16 July; Sky Atlantic and NOW
